The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) announced yesterday that Facebook and Fox Sports renewed their agreement to share matches for the Conmebol Libertadores 2020 in the Spanish-speaking countries of the tournament, expanding the football matches offer available on Facebook Watch to fans of the whole region.
The new agreement is available in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, and is extended from the group stage to the quarterfinals of the tournament, bringing fans more football matches on Facebook Watch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the exclusive Thursday’s matches from Facebook to Fox Sports.
‘The last season of the Liberators has shown us how sports fans have been involved through new social forms with the championship, with millions of people gathering to follow the games on Watch. We are excited to renew this partnership with Fox Sports and bring even more opportunities for fans to connect with the tournament on Facebook’, said Leonardo Lenz, Head of Sports Partnerships and Programming Latam of Facebook. Fans of the Copa Conmebol Libertadores can follow the football matches live on Facebook Watch through the Conmebol Libertadores and Fox Sports official accounts on Facebook.
From Conmebol they have also expressed themselves on the renewal of the agreement, through Juan Emilio Roa, Commercial and Marketing Director at Conmebol. ‘At Conmebol we are committed with promoting and show South American football inside and outside our borders, so we are especially happy to renew agreements like this with Facebook Watch and Fox Sports, that bring the great celebration of the Copa Liberators to fans of around the world through new digital platforms’, he said.
Facebook has the Conmebol Libertadores broadcasting rights until 2022. In Spanish-speaking countries of the competition, apart from to the new agreement with Fox Sports for the new season, football matches continue on Watch until the finals.
Through an official statement, the Tourism and Sports Ministry of Argentina confirmed that some sports competitions scheduled for the next few days in the country in which athletes from countries affected by COVID-19 (Coronavirus) should participate were cancelled or postponed. According to official information, the Sword World Cup has been suspended and the South American Swimming Championship together with the International Athletics Grand Prix and the Pre-Olympic Boxing Tournament were put off, all to be played in Argentina. The Copa de la Superliga -professional football competition in Argentina- is currently being played without football fans, and it is scheduled to finish next May 31st.
Apart from that, Conmebol has decided to cancel all football matches scheduled for the Copa Libertadores between March 15th and 21st, and informed that in the coming weeks the new schedule for the competition will be reported. Days ago, the entity had announced the renewal of the agreement between Facebook and Fox Sports to share the broadcast of matches during this season of the tournament.
